Atisha, an Indian sage, proposed 59 slogans for codifying conduct.
They're not the usual thing for the obsessive "Pursuit of Happiness,"
but probably for that reason they work wonders.
Here's a selected list of these recommendations - the ones that have meant the most to me:
Atisha's Slogans:
contemplate
the great kindness
of everyone
*
Always apply
only a joyful mind
*
Don't ponder others
*
Abandon any hope
of fruition
*
Don't be so
trustworthy
*
Don't
malign
others
*
Don't
wait in ambush
*
Don't bring things
to a painful point
*
Don't transfer the ox's load
to the cow
*
Don't try
to be the fastest
*
Don't act
with a twist
*
Don't seek others' pain
as the limbs of your own happiness
*
Always meditate
on whatever provokes resentment
*
Don't
expect
applause
